Reduction in environmental impacts of our products
We place a great emphasis on material saving during production. Our company is constantly striving to reduce the weight of corrugated sheets and increase the proportions of waste fiber in paper packaging, with identical functions and constant quality.
The complete reusability is an important aspect when designing our products.
To this end we have worked out solutions, in which combined packages consisting of several types of materials can be replaced by single-type ones made only from paper. Our achievements in this regard have been recognized with international prizes.
Collection and processing of waste paper
Our efforts to increase waste paper processing are closely related to protection of the environment.
To cover the increasing demand for waste paper from domestic sources is considered as a strategic objective. To achieve this objective we founded Duparec Recycling Ltd. in 1994. The business is developing dynamically with a collection network operated by contractual partners effectively covering the whole country. In 5 years the company has become the countrys largest trader in collecting waste paper.
There has been steady growth in the use of waste paper and a sharp increase in recent years. Use of domestic waste paper in particular shows a very significant increase.
Effective use of natural resources, modernization of technological equipment
The DUNAPACK group is steadily modernizing and expanding its manufacturing equipments in order to make an effective use of resources. We want to keep the level of communal and dangerous waste materials damaging the environment as low as possible.
To this end we have completely modernized the waste paper processing systems at both sites of our Paper Division (in Csepel and Dunajvros)in 1992-93, and since then we have up-dated these systems continuously. As a result the present, so-called, material preparation system i.e. the processing system making waste paper suitable for paper manufacturing, are capable of processing the whole range of packaging waste paper except drained liquid packaging cardboard boxes. Energy and water consumption of the operations, materials left over from converting (rejects) comply with internationally accepted levels.
Of our technological equipment, only the Csepel paper machines may be regarded as not up-to-date.
These equipments were installed 23 resp. 41 years ago and its complete modernization or replacement could not yet be carried out for financial reasons. This is why specific energy and water consumption for entire paper making is higher than the Western European level.
In 1999 we managed to reduce our shortcomings in Dunajvros. We fitted the paper machine with a pressing section that increases the dry material content of the paper sheet from the previous 43% to 52%, which is advanced even by international comparison, and reduces specific heat demand by approximately 15%.
With the development of new water sources, and making existing ones more closed, we were able to reduce fresh water demand for individual work processes to half their earlier value.
We also took environmental factors into account in developing our Corrugated Division. The merger of the two plants operating on the Csepel site into one in 1998 significantly lowered the need for internal transport and resulted in fuel savings and reduction in air pollution and heating and lighting costs.
At the same time modernization of the heating system and fitting of roof lighting forms took place. These developments have also resulted in significant energy savings.
In 1998 the development, in which printing ink was selected in compliance with the requirements of modern technology and environmental protection expectations, began. Today we can say that the environmental burden of the (water-based) flexo paints we use is minimal.
At our Nyregyhza site replacement and modernization of our corrugated sheet production and processing machines, and bag and sack manufacturing machines has been ongoing since 1985.
At our subsidiary, Halas Officeproducts Ltd., most of the earlier noisy,
saw-toothed plate cutting machines have been replaced today by modern circular knife cutting equipment, which is also completely suitable from ergonomic and employment protection points of view.
Thanks to the structures of our energy measuring, controlling and evaluating systems, and the extension of computerized control of processes, use of energy is constantly reducing.
Air pollution reduction
At the Csepel site, because of the modernization of energy producing equipment and energy fuel selection, we were able to significantly reduce air pollution. The quantity of harmful materials emitted in waste gases is merely a fraction of allowed limits.
Duparec Ltd. put an end to dust pollution occurring in the course of waste paper processing with two dust separating installations operated at the central site. Dusty air is filtered by 4 outlets for the document-shredder and by 12 outlets for the baling machine.
Prevention of water pollution
In the Dunajvros pulp mill the quantity of chlorine emitted into the environment and the products chlorine content (AOX) fell as a result of increasing amounts in the hydrogen-peroxide bleaching process. Effective and closed-system regeneration of chemicals ensures that chemicals from pulp making only reach the environment in insignificant amounts.
We consider a reduction in the KOI burden the most important task of water management. We have achieved a reduction by half in the KOI burden per product unit by reducing fiber losses and continually developing cleaning equipment, as well as by improving regulation of their operation.
By building automatic oiling systems into machines, we managed to reduce losses of lubricants and keep the oil content of sewage within allowed limits.
Waste management
By updating technological equipment, critically reviewing materials used and modernizing our waste management, we have continually reduced the amount of waste arising during production, especially dangerous waste. This trend is shown by the diagram. (The exceptional value for 1997 comes from selection of procumbent chemicals in relation to introduction of KIR.)
