In order to guarantee continuous improvement in environmental performance and transparency of environmental management for all involved, our company began introducing environmentally centered control systems in 1996 in compliance with international standard ISO 14001. In the first phase, the introduction and certification of the system took place in 1997 in the Paper Division in Csepel and Dunajvros, which had significant effect on the environment. The Paper Division was followed by Duparec Ltd, a Dunapack subsidiary company in 1998., which also acquired certification, and then in 1999 we began the introduction of an environmentally centered control system in the corrugated division and in the corrugated and sack factory in Nyregyhza.
At that time an objective was set for all plants to introduce a comprehensive uniform control system by integrating quality control systems introduced previously with environmental control systems that existed or yet to be developed. This uniform system includes the company's head office also, where strategic decisions are taken with special regard to the environmental performance in addition to the three factory units. (e.g setting up new companies)
By June 2000 our company had completed preparations for an integrated control system, worked out the system's fundamentals and determined in principle the common objectives and programs for all our units. Integrated transformation of the quality control system i.e. according to identical considerations, and uniform procedures were laid down for all the factories. The ISO 14001 standard system of requirements has been built into all profit-oriented procedural systems and its effective introduction into the operation is ongoing.
We would like to gradually extend the operation of the integrated system in coming years, taking into account the experience of the domestic and foreign subsidiaries of Dunapack Ltd.
The general operational principles of the integrated system and the major stages of its development are shown by the PDCA cycle shown in the diagram below:
The basis of the system is provided by analysis of environmental effects, underlying the planning process. This includes developing environmental policy and defining long and short-term objectives. The second step is to realize the designated objectives and implementation, which is followed by supervision and evaluation of environmental performance. Correction of any possible deficiencies is the last stage of the process, followed only by the formulation of new plans.
Within this circular process, operation of the environmental control system includes the following tasks:
- survey of environmental effects, classification of effects, defining significant effects;
- formulation of environmental policy, breaking down into short-term objectives;
- ensuring operation in compliance with the system's principles;
- training of employees, increasing environmental awareness;
- introduction a system of documentation ensuring conditions of supervision;
- examination of suppliers and products and services they sell from an environmental point of view;
- enforcing environmental considerations in the course of planning and development of products and technology;
- continuousl tracking and regulation of environmental effects caused by operations (energy and water usage, air and water polluting materials, waste emissions);
- minimizing environmental effects of service activities (storage, delivery, energy supply), prevention of emergency situations and moderating damage;
- informing relevant parties of the company's environmental performance;
- review of the operation of the integrated control system and correction of any possible deficiencies.
