Customer Consultancy
The trade conference for some fifty customers was held in Csepel The event was designed to acquaint our partners' new staff with Dunapack's activities. After an introduction by Sales Director Imre Hopka, technical customer support staff member Zoltn Starcz gave a ninety-minute talk on corrugated products. Starting with the history of paper making, this covered the entire course of production from the evolution of corrugated paper manufacturing to the design of graphic backgrounds, and ended with a briefing on the Company's services. In connection with this, Head of the Sales Department, Mrs. Szab born Tmea Borsodi gave a presentation on soon-to-be-launched electronic trading. The conference closed with a plant visit.

Technical developments
New units have been added to the Martin in-line folder-gluer in Dunajvros. The dryer now installed in the line stops ink from running even at high throughput, and permits coated cover layers to be printed to meet special requirements. Minor modifications were made at the dispenser and after the delivery position to relieve machine running from the limitations of human capabilities.
Since the Martin machine was commissioned, the number of printed items has jumped and ink usage has consequently reached four tonnes a month. Until now, mixed ink was taken from Csepel in canisters, but the new quantity has made it worthwhile fitting out a new paint shop on-site.
The output of the Dunajvros board machine is sometimes effectively limited by staff being unable to maintain proper manual stacking. Higher speed cannot be achieved with this arrangement, and so there are plans to acquire a pallet loading line.
A new line in Csepel consisting of a two printing-unit Dynaflex printer, a BOBST SPO 160-S flat-bed die-cutter and a Dyna-break blank separator was installed in December and commissioned in January.
There is a rising demand for picking band systems that are perfect in every respect. We will have to meet this by designing an appropriate facility into the existing production line. The present equipment is only in use for lack of an alternative. The planned applicator machine will enable more precise and cheaper applications that better match the demands imposed by the market.
Background
We have purchased forklifts for both sites and replaced some old vehicles. In addition to IT system development, the computer workstations will be upgraded and, in some places, increased in number. In Dunajvros, in conjunction with the Packaging Paper Division, we have brought the factory site entrance up to modern standards. A new access control system is in operation in Csepel.

Recognition of business excellence - "the Oscar Award" for quality
The Corrugated Division of Dunapack Ltd, has again carried out a self-assessment under the EFQM Excellence Model, under which extremely detailed and strict set of criteria is applied to the entire organization's activities and operation rather than to a product or service.
Under the fundamental concept of the model, management pursues customer and worker satisfaction and a positive effect on society via well-grounded trading policy and strategy and by managing staff, resources and processes. The target outcome is excellent business results. The 9 criteria in the model are divided into two major groups: Enablers and Results.
- When looking at Enablers, assessors seek to determine how the organization has achieved - and achieves - its results.
- When looking at Results, the assessors examine the results the organization has achieved and their nature.
Enablers and Results rank equally in the model, and of the 9 criteria, it is customer satisfaction that carries the highest value, with a maximum score of 200 points.
Self-assessment helps to:
- identify the organization's strong and weak points
- designate the most important development areas within the organization
- determine the directions of future development by comparison with other organizations' performance.
After the Corrugated Division had carried out this self-assessment, it sent the results in the form of an award entry to the Hungarian Quality Development Centre. The divisional management wanted to know how the TQM techniques it employs and the division's overall operation would shape up alongside other manufacturing companies in the country of similar size. The Hungarian National Quality Award is based on the same criteria as the European Quality Award, and since 1996 has been conferred on one company each year in each of four categories (small, medium and large producer, and service provider). The status of "the Oscar Award" for quality is evident from the fact that it is presented to the winners in Parliament, by the Minister of Economic Affairs himself.
To pick out the company that is truly worthy of the award, entrants are subjected to a very strict procedure. A committee made up of the country's foremost quality experts reads the entries and determines which fulfil the minimum requirements. Entrants that get through this qualification go on to the "final", in which the assessment committee makes an on-site visit to match up the entry with reality. They inspect the documents referred to, survey the entire production process, and talk to the workers to find out whether the management's intentions work out in practice.
The Corrugated Division also reached the final last year. It performed well, achieving a high score, but was not the best entrant. The management studied the report it had received from the assessment committee, implemented a series of improving measures, and put in another entry this year. After passing into the final, it won the National Quality Award in its category. On 21 December 2001, Minister of Economic Affairs Gyrgy Matolcsi presented the award to the Division Manager Andrs Boros.
A publication has been prepared jointly For young people choosing a profession by the Lrntffy Zsuzsanna Vocational High School and Dunapack Ltd. plant in Dunajvros. The Recruitment Guide Lines laid down at the corrugated divisions Dunajvros gives details of vocational training of skilled workers and technicians for paper manufacturing and processing, further on the duration and financial support opportunities of education offered by the school.
The aim of introducing the units of Dunapack Ltd. in Csepel and Dunajvros was to arouse interest in the profession and vocational possibilities of the paper industry hoping to attract the young generation.
