Recycling of waste paper at Dunapack. Waste paper is recycled in large quantities at various locations in Hungary. Dunapack has the largest processing capacity. “The company produces corrugated board and sack paper from waste paper” says the financial director of the corporate packaging division. These products are manufactured almost exclusively from secondary raw materials, with a minimal primary pulp content of 1%.

The paper mills of Dunapack in Dunaújváros and Csepel have an annual output of approx. 300 thousand tons of paper, recycling 350 thousand tons of waste paper. “As much as 85 percent of this waste paper comes from domestic suppliers” says the financial director. The smooth supply is ensured under Dunapack’s contracts and good cooperation with two environmental coordinating organisations, namely ÖKO-Pannon and ÖKO-Pack Kht. People’s growing participation in selective waste collection is also promising. The director noted that waste generators should be obligated to join the environmental coordination agencies, because it would further ensure smooth waste paper supply in the long run. As regards waste imports, the company purchases 15 thousand tons of kraft waste paper from Germany and 10 thousand tons of corrugated board waste from Slovakia. Domestic prices are aligned with international level in accordance with the agreement made with the Waste Collection Association.

Waste paper recycling has twofold – environmental and economic – benefits. First, less waste is deposited at the dumping sites and secondly, waste paper serves as valuable raw material for paper manufacturers. The director emphasized that Hungary has complied with relevant EU regulations for the third year now. It is now a common practice for paper manufacturers to indicate on paper products that they were produced from recycled material, suggesting by no means that their quality should be inferior.

Over the past few years, a member of the Hamburger-Group, Dunapack has extended its recycling capacities in the CEE region, establishing a number of new plants in Romania, Poland, Croatia, the Ukraine and Bulgaria. According to the owner’s plans, Dunapack will, in the following years, extend its paper manufacturing capacities in Hungary, as well. Preliminary calculations suggest the cost of equipment to be near EUR 200 million, while that of the power station to cost approx. EUR 70-80 million.
