CEPI countries see a bumper production year in 2002

Brussels European paper and board output totaled 22.3 million tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2002, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). Although it was the lowest quarterly production figure of the year, output was still 3.8% higher than the year-earlier period. The final quarter brought annual production up to 90 million tonnes, just below the record output level of 2000.

In 2009, the operations and structure of Dunapack Paper- and Packaging Ltd. will change significantly, greatly transforming the future structure of the company. In Hungary Dunapack, which operates subsidiaries in five neighbouring countries, deals with the collection of waste paper, and the manufacturing of packaging materials and corrugated products. As a member firm of the owner Prinzhorn Holding, the Company closed 2008 as its second most successful year, with earnings of HUF 5.3 billion.

Changing Packing Material Markets

Packaging is big business - global production is estimated at nearly USD 400 billion. Consumer packaging material account for the overwhelming majority of this business: comprising nearly two thirds of all consumption. Corrugated board accounts for nearly 20% of all packaging sales, second only to rigid plastic packaging materials.

Corrugated Board Demand in Europe is Up

According to the forecasts stated by Pyrabelisk Ltd. (Great Britain) in its study of November 2002, the corrugated board production of eleven Central and Eastern European countries (Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia) will reach some 4.5 billion sq. meters by 2005.

Corrugated board market looks forward to explosive capacity growth

By the end of 2005, capacity rises in the worldwide corrugated board market are set to a total of 6 M tonnes. At present, Asia is leading in the capacity growth: in the next two years, China alone plans growth of more than 3.8 M tonnes. There is no sign of a slowdown in China’s supercharged rate of growth. Nine Dragons, the Chinese paper company, wants to push up its capacity by another 2.5 million tonnes in the following years.

Dunapack Affiliate Leads the Market

Two million euros for development at the Sepsiszentgyörgy plant
Dunapack Rambox, Dunapack Rt.’s affiliate in Rumania, made record profit last year. This year, the company is planning to make a 2-million-Euro investment for quality improvement and capacity increase in its plant in Rumania. Dunapack Rt., the owner operates production plants in several countries in the region apart from Rumania, and is considering further expansion.

Dunapack looks to electricity liberalisation

Dunapack is expecting price cuts from the opening up of the electricity market, we were told by the company’s deputy CEO, Zoltán Szikla. He claimed that the present tariff system works against large consumers like Dunapack, which pay some 25 per cent more for power than large companies operating in Austria or Germany. The company’s electricity bill this year will top some 1.7 billion forints, the greatest consumption being in its paper making operations.
