Central and Eastern Europe’s most state-of-the-art paper mill located in Dunaújváros, Hungary was inaugurated on Friday when Hungary’s Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai and the owner, Thomas Prinzhorn pressed a symbolic button. The investment costs for the mill which uses the latest technology amounted to EUR 200 million, from which the Hungarian government provided support worth some EUR 14 million.
Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai noted at the ceremony: this investment is not simply a business venture and it not only generates profit for the investor and creates jobs – it is also about assuming responsibility for the future. Mr Bajnai appreciated the significance of the investment also for protection of the environment. As part of the Austrian Prinzhorn Group, Hamburger Hungaria’s paper mill creates jobs directly for 281 employees, and it provides work indirectly for 500-600 persons.

This is a significant investment not only in terms of job creation but also for environment protection, since the new factory – together with paper mill No. 3 which has been operating excellently since 1976 and is owned by Dunapack – uses approx. 90 % of the waste paper generated in Hungary. Thus both companies contribute significantly to Hungary’s compliance with its obligation to recycle all packaging waste set out in EU directives.
The new paper mill which was constructed in a record time of just over one and a half years, started trial operations in July. The foundation-stone was laid on 9 November 2007 and the experts began installing the machines in September 2008. During the construction work some 3000 km of metal components, 750 km of cable, 80 km of pipes, 325 km of electrical wires and approximately 200 000 tons of concrete were used and 68 sub-contractors were involved. There were some days during implementation when 1400 people worked on the site concurrently.
The new paper mill with a working width of 7.8 m and a manufacturing speed of approximately 80 km/hour has a yearly capacity of 350 000 tons of brown, light weight liner and medium papers for corrugating board made entirely from waste paper.
