Changes at Dunapack Ltd. in 2009

Press material
In 2009, the operations and structure of Dunapack Paper- and Packaging Ltd. will change significantly, greatly transforming the future structure of the company. In Hungary Dunapack, which operates subsidiaries in five neighbouring countries, deals with the collection of waste paper, and the manufacturing of packaging materials and corrugated products. As a member firm of the owner Prinzhorn Holding, the Company closed 2008 as its second most successful year, with earnings of HUF 5.3 billion.

In 2009, the Company will phase out its paper manufacturing activity at the Csepel site in two stages. The operation of the two paper-making machines, which are no longer competitive in mass production, cannot be continued economically here in an environment which, in the meantime, has been transformed into a residential area. In addition to technology development, several other serious investments should have been implemented in the areas of environmental protection and security. Discontinuation is primarily enabled by the fact that the Group is installing a productive paper-making machine built entirely on a waste base, with the latest technology, in Dunaújváros. It will start operations in July. In line with the schedule, paper-making machines Nos. 4 and 6 will stop operating at the end of March and May respectively. The operators of the new paper-making machine will be workers employed and trained in Csepel and Dunaújváros, and new staff selected from the region. The investment will create workplaces for 280 employees directly and nearly 600 indirectly. With its capacity of 600,000 tons, the paper-manufacturing facility operating with the new paper-making machine in Dunaújváros will be able to fulfil EU requirements for the recycling of solid waste from settlements and packaging waste, and is therefore particularly important from an environmental point of view.

The discontinuation of paper production in Csepel does not affect the future of the other core activity performed at the site, i.e. corrugated production. By transforming the necessary infrastructure of the site, from the middle of 2009, the corrugated plant will perform its activities in Csepel remaining geographically close to its clientele. f

The Hungarian companies operating under the auspices of Prinzhorn Holding have so far operated in a loose formation. As a result of the significant changes to the operations, the legal structure of the Company will also be transformed in line with the business management structure. By the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010, only the corrugated board manufacturing units and their subsidiaries will remain with Dunapack Ltdt., while the Company itself will appear on the domestic and European markets as part of the packaging division of the Group. From 1 January this year, the new brand name is Dunapack Packaging for all foreign (i.e. Austrian and German) corrugated plants as well. In the future, the paper-manufacturing division will be integrated under the name “undefined” – Hamburger Hungária Kft., which is currently arranging the investment in Dunaújváros, is already legally operating in this structure. From the beginning of 2010, the whole Hungarian paper-manufacturing activity will be arranged into a uniform legal structure, thus the two core activities will continue operations under the two separate brand names Dunapack Packaging and Hamburger Containerboard..

In the new organisation to be formed in the future, corrugated manufacturing will continue within Dunapack Ltd. at the three existing sites in Hungary: Csepel, Dunaújváros and Nyíregyháza. This local activity is supplemented by the production capacities of the subsidiaries. These plants will also operate under the brand name Dunapack Packaging. In addition to the plants operating in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia and Ukraine, in 2008 Dunapack started the construction of a new, large-capacity corrugated plant near Herson in southern Ukraine. Due to the uncertain economic situation and market conditions which developed in Ukraine as a result of the global crisis, in order to avoid losses, the construction work will be suspended after the completion of the building and the project will be rescheduled and continued subject to changes in external conditions. By the time the new plant is installed, the market position there can be improved with the two smaller existing processing plants operating in Ukraine.

From 1 January 2009, the operative management of Dunapack Ltd. and also the position of General Manager passed from Miklós Galli to László Panyi.

László Panyi, the General Manager, has been working at Dunapack Ltd. for years. His career began at the Csepel Paper Plant, and he went on to become involved in board production, later establishing a cement manufacturing company. Then, in 2003, he returned to the company as deputy general manager and was in charge of foreign subsidiary and diffusion projects. In 2008, he became a member of the Board, and from 1 January 2009 he has been General Manager of the Ltd.

Miklós Galli, who has managed Dunapack as chairman and CEO since 1990, continues as chairman and will later contribute to the management of the company as an advisor and leader of large projects.
