Dunapack is Expanding Business in the Ukraine

Dunapack PPaper- and Packagings Ltd. is investing USD 5 million in a new corrugated product facility to be established at its sack plant in Zhidachev. The plant will produce 30 million square meters of corrugated board each year, worth around USD 7 or 8 million - revealed Mr. Sándor Sárdi Director of Dunapack´s plant in Nyíregyháza. The capital investment will provide 50 to 60 new jobs in the Ukraine plant. Building expansion, line installation, and pilot operation could start as early as this year, with production brought up to full capacity next year.
Three years ago Dunapack established the sack plant in Zhidachev through a USD 4 million investment, which now employs seventy persons and its production value is around USD 7 million. The sacks made there are used primarily in the construction industry. Two years ago the plant added boxes to its product line. Raw material for the corrugated board had been brought from Dunapack´s plant in Nyíregyháza until now, however it was subject to a 20 percent customs charge, so it was financially more sensible to launch production on-site. The boxes are mainly used by the food industry as transport cartons. According to Dunapack´s experience, the Ukrainian economy has also begun to exhibit growth, with several multinational firms already having set foot in the country.
Over the past years the company treated Eastern European expansion as a priority in its strategy. Initially it opened a factory in Romania in 1996, investing USD 15 million. Dunapack´s firm called Rambox manufactures corrugated cardboard and boxes. The company opened a plant in Poland three years ago. The result of a USD 20 million green-field investment is the firm called Eurobox Polska producing packing materials.

2001 Quality Award

The 2001 National Quality Award goes to Magyar Forgácsolástechnikai Tanácsadó és Szolgáltató Kft. of Győr in the small producers category, and to the Corrugated Division of Dunapack Rt. of Budapest in the medium-sized category. [...] This is the sixth round of the award, which takes the form of a small sculpture, given in recognition of excellence, since it started in 1996, but this year, for the first time, winners were announced in only two of the four categories. Minister of Economic Affairs György Matolcsy, who presented the prizes in Parliament yesterday, told Népszabadság that the jury had judged the entries very strictly, raising assessment standards to the level of European quality criteria. This is one reason why, out of the thousand or so companies that requested competition entry conditions only eight came out as finalists after the long preparations. Experience of past years shows that companies that do well in domestic contests start with very good chances in the European Excellence Award. The Minister claimed that Hungarian judgement is thus a kind of pre-qualification for the international arena, pointing out that after the award ceremony, he handed over Prime Minister Viktor Orbán´s Certificates of Recognition to the Hungarian companies that had reached the finals of this year´s European contest.
