The quality assurance systems ISO 14001 on environmental management and OHSAS 18001 on occupational health and security covering the entire operations and all sites of Dunapack Zrt. have been audited and the effect thereof has been extended up to year 2009. The National Directorate of Environmental Protection, Nature Conservation and Water has audited and approved the environmental management system of the Dunaújváros facility in accordance with the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme of the EU (EMAS) and has extended the effect of the relevant document up to mid-December 2009.
Through environmental investment projects and taking measures in recent years with a view to protect the environment, the environmental load exerted by the company has reached the level that comes with using state-of-the-art technology. Efforts in 2007 had to be focused on maintaining or slightly improving this achievement.
In 2007, the construction of the biological sewage water treatment facility went on uninterrupted at Csepel site. Having obtained the relevant environmental and construction permits in 2006, the contract for the construction of the facility was concluded on 20 April. The sewage treatment plant was completed by 1 November and test runs began. Full scale operation and compliance with emission limits are expected to take place in September 2008. Groundwater purification following removal of contaminated soil dating back to the remote past at the Csepel site also continued. In 2007, the company has paid HUF 54 million for the purposes of groundwater purification and disposal of hazardous wastes generated in its course. The rate of water purification is slower than expected, therefore the job must continue for years to come. The method applied for purification prevents the contamination from spreading.
The environmental indicators describing environmental achievements at the Dunaújváros site correspond to previous year’s figures, within prescribed limits. Specific fibre and fresh water use have slightly decreased, with slight increase in chemical and biological oxygen demand, which are indicators of the load exerted by paper manufacturing on live waters.
On account of some minor organisational and administrative defects, environmental penalty was imposed on the company at approx. HUF 10 million in 2007, as in the previous year.
Research and development activity involved product – and, to a lesser extent – technological developments. In 2007, expenditure on R&D reached HUF 50 million. |
